AI eBay listings that get found: titles, specifics and pricing

AI can draft an eBay listing in seconds, but a listing only sells if buyers can find it and trust it. What makes titles, specifics, descriptions and prices work, and what a person still needs to check.

AI eBay listings can save hours: a title, item specifics and a description drafted in seconds instead of twenty minutes. But speed only helps if the listing gets found in eBay's search, answers the buyer's questions and is accurate. A fast listing that's wrong costs more than a slow one that's right.

This guide covers what makes each part of an eBay listing work, where AI helps most, and why every draft still needs a person to check it before it goes live.

What AI does well in an eBay listing, and what it doesn't

AI is good at structure and at the tedious parts: turning product information into a well-ordered title, filling dozens of item specifics consistently, and writing a clear description in the same layout every time. It doesn't get tired on the fiftieth listing of the day.

It's weaker where facts matter and the information is thin. If a product page doesn't say what material something is, a model may guess. If two sizes look alike in a photo, it may pick the wrong one. Treat AI as a fast first draft from someone who hasn't seen the item, because that's exactly what it is. It's why SellingSquads never publishes an AI draft on its own: a person checks every one first.

How to write an eBay title that gets found

The title is the most important text in the listing. It's central to how eBay's search finds your item, and it's what a buyer reads in the results. Check eBay's current character limit for titles and use most of it with words that help.

Put the words buyers search for first

A dependable order is: the brand, if there is one, then what the item is, then the details that separate it from similar items, such as model, size, colour, material, quantity or compatibility. For an unbranded item, leave "Unbranded" out of the title; it belongs in item specifics.

  • Weaker: Lovely Gift Idea Women's Bag Black New
  • Stronger: Women's Leather Crossbody Bag Black Adjustable Strap Zip Pocket Small

What to leave out

  • Words that add nothing to search, such as "look", "wow", "amazing" or "L@@K".
  • Capitals throughout, and decorative symbols.
  • Other brands' names, unless the item genuinely is that brand, or a brand is needed to describe compatibility accurately and eBay's rules allow it.
  • The same word repeated several times.
  • Claims you can't support, such as "best" or "genuine" without proof.

Use the buyer's own words for their country. A UK listing sells trainers, jumpers and nappies; a US listing sells sneakers, sweaters and diapers. Writing for one site in another site's English costs you searches.

Choosing the right eBay category and item specifics

The category decides which item specifics are asked for and which filters a buyer can use to find you. An item in the wrong category may still appear in a keyword search, but it disappears as soon as buyers narrow the results with the filters beside them.

If you're unsure, search for the item on eBay and see which category the best-selling listings use. When two categories are plausible, pick the one whose filters describe your item best.

Item specifics are those filters. Brand, size, colour, material, type, style, department and many more depend on the category. Fill in every required specific and as many recommended ones as you honestly can. Each filled specific is another way into your listing; each empty one is a filter you've dropped out of. For listings with variations, make sure each option's values agree with the specifics.

Descriptions and photos that answer buyers' questions

Most buyers read the description on a phone, so keep it short and easy to scan. A layout that works for most items:

  1. 1One or two sentences on what it is and who it's for.
  2. 2Key features as a short list.
  3. 3Size, measurements and weight.
  4. 4What's included.
  5. 5Care, compatibility or any other practical notes.

eBay restricts what a description can contain, such as active content and links that take buyers off eBay, so check the current rules if you use a template. Keep postage and returns in your business policies rather than repeating them in every description, where they go out of date.

Photos do more selling than words. Use a full set: the main photo on a plain background, the item from every side, close-ups of details, something that shows its size, and everything included. For pre-owned items, photograph every flaw clearly. A buyer who sees a mark before buying is far less likely to return the item because of it.

How to price an eBay listing with real fees in mind

Price against the market, then check the margin. Look at what similar items have actually sold for recently, not what they're listed at, and where most of those sales cluster. Then work back: after eBay's fees, postage and your own costs, is there enough left?

A listing priced to sell that loses money on every order is worse than no listing at all. Our guide to working out real eBay profit has a simple formula for checking a price before you commit to it, and our guide to eBay product research covers finding the price band where an item sells.

Why a human should check AI eBay listings before they go live

As the seller, you're responsible for what a listing says, whoever or whatever wrote it. A wrong size leads to a return; a wrong brand can lead to a listing being removed; a claim you can't back up leads to a case. A few minutes spent checking each draft prevents all of these.

Before you publish, check that:

  • The title names the item correctly and doesn't include another brand's name by mistake.
  • The category is the one buyers would browse for this item.
  • Item specifics are true for this item, especially size, colour, material and compatibility.
  • The description says nothing the item can't back up, and nothing about safety or certification you can't prove.
  • Variations each have the right option names, photos, price and quantity.
  • The price leaves a profit after eBay's fees and postage.
  • The photos show this exact item or, for pre-owned items, its real condition.

Sellers who check every draft get the speed of AI without its mistakes. Sellers who don't tend to spend the time they saved dealing with returns.

How SellingSquads drafts eBay listings for you to check

SellingSquads' AI listings start from a product link. SellingSquads writes the title, picks the category, fills in the item specifics and writes the description, and prices the listing with eBay's real fees. The draft then waits for you to check it against the list above before anything is published. Each AI listing uses one credit, and a draft that fails gives its credit back.

For second-hand stock, pre-owned listings from photos start from what's in front of you. Photos taken on a phone go up to eBay as they're added. SellingSquads reads labels and wear, picks eBay's category and pre-owned condition (for clothing, Pre-owned Excellent, Good or Fair), writes the title, specifics and description with your measurements, and offers any flaws it sees for eBay's condition notes. It prices the item from similar listings in your country and what your account has sold like it in the last 90 days. The bin it's stored in and what you paid stay with the item, so it's easy to find when it sells and its cost is already recorded.

Once live, every listing and draft sits in one table, where a listing's price and stock can be changed from its row, much like Seller Hub's quick edit. Description templates include a photo gallery, and variations can have their price or quantity changed in bulk, so a price rise across every size takes one change rather than a dozen.

Listings don't stand still after they're published. If the place you buy a listed product from runs out or puts its price up, SellingSquads' stock and price watch sends an alert, so you can change the price or the stock before an order arrives that you can't fill at a profit.

In a team, drafts can also come from product hunting: once a reviewer approves a hunted product, it drafts itself, ready for the same final check before it goes live.

Questions people ask

Can I publish AI-written eBay listings without checking them?+

You can, but you shouldn't. The seller is responsible for every listing, and AI can guess wrongly at sizes, materials, brands or compatibility. A short check before publishing prevents returns and removed listings.

What order should words go in an eBay title?+

Usually the brand first, then what the item is, then the details that set it apart, such as model, size, colour and material. Leave out filler words and symbols, and use the words buyers in that country search for.

Do item specifics really matter on eBay?+

Yes. Item specifics are the filters buyers use to narrow their search. A listing with empty specifics drops out of results as soon as a buyer applies a filter it doesn't match.

How does SellingSquads price an AI listing?+

SellingSquads prices each draft with eBay's real fees for the account. For pre-owned items from photos, it also looks at similar listings in your country and what your account sold like it in the last 90 days.
